St Marys – Swaffham Prior – Sunday April 14th
Our first concert of 2024 will be at 4pm in St Mary’s, Swaffham Prior.
It is a joy to be performing in our rehearsal home – the Village Hall has been a welcoming rehearsal venue since we started.
St Marys is a beautiful church with an unusual round tower is set on one of only three churchyards in Cambridgeshire to have two churches together. St Cyria & St Julitta, next door, offers “champing” and is used as a performance space by the Churches Conservation Trust. We performed here in 2019, so we are delighted to be singing in St Marys this year. Both churches have an excellent accoustic.
For 14th April we have chosen a rich repertoire to illustrate Why We Sing. Showcasing the power and emotional intensity of song across the ages our programme includes Renaissance music by Thomas Weelkes, exquisite settings of religious texts by Faure, Gjeilo and Pitoni, folk songs arranged by Ralph Vaughan Williams, and modern gems, such as Whitacre’s Sing Gently, exploring aspects of why we sing. Close your eyes to the lilting lullaby Hushabye Mountain and revisit rousing favourites from the enduring Sound of Music. Tickets will be available on the door or by phoning 01223 892001. Refreshments will be available at the interval; our family ticket is great value, including two adults and two children for just £32……
We are planning summer concerts in Cambridgeshire and Norfolk. In Cambridgeshire we are really excited to be returning to Balsham in the Church of the Holy Trinity, Balsham on 14th July, The theme will be skylight – from the moon, sun and stars. A date for your diary!
